As part of my studies I have carried out primary research into coffee shop loyalty programs. Research results indicate that the majority of respondents who are enrolled on coffee shop loyalty programs use their reward cards every time or most of the time. In contrast, just 4% of loyalty card holders do not make use of their loyalty cards at all.

However, when asked if they have a strong preference for this programme only a small percentage has “agreed” or “strongly agreed”.

Finding also show that the majority of reward program participants would not stop visiting the coffee shop brand they hold a loyalty card for if it withdrew its reward program. Only a small proportion of loyalty programme members have admitted that this withdrawal would prevent them from patronising the coffee shop brand. Moreover, primary research results show that around 40% of loyalty card holders are enrolled on reward programs offered by more than one coffee shop chain.

Results of this research also show that gender does not influence the ability of coffee shop reward programs to build brand loyalty. With respect to income, it is not possible to give a full and clear answer to whether the effectiveness of reward programs at creating brand loyalty is affected by a customers’ income. Findings reveal that income does not impact the relationship between loyalty card possession and the behavioural dimension of brand loyalty, specifically frequency of visits. However, it was not possible to test the relationship between income, loyalty programme participation and the attitudinal component of brand loyalty.
